Ajax finally sign Sikora
AMSTERDAM, July 22 (DS), by Robin Wyers-- Victor Sikora has signed for Ajax in a €4.5 million move from Vitesse Arnhem. The 24-year-old left sided forward was officially presented this morning by the Amsterdam club, where he has signed a five-year contract. Sikora told the press, "as long as there isn't a signature drawn, you have to be prepared for anything. Luckily everything has fallen into place, because Ajax has always been my first choice. Now I'm at the club where I want to be".
Sikora's move to London club, Fulham had seemed imminent. Jean Tigana's club were prepared to pay €.5.5 million, while Ajax could or only wanted to muster €4 million for the player that Ronald Koeman had been tracking for months. However, when it seemed that Fulham were only willing to pay the transfer fee in long-term installments, Vitesse pulled out, with bitter memories of the Pierre van Hooijdonk transfer saga to Benfica. Ajax immediately stepped in, adding €0.5 million to their original offer. Ajax's technical director, Leo Beenhakker said, "Ajax was looking for a left-sided striker and Sikora has always been our number one candidate".
Meanwhile, Sikora's arrival appears to have spelled the end for Yugoslavian player, Perica Ognjenovic, who was on trial at the Dutch champions. The former Real Madrid player was available on a free transfer from FC Kaiserslautern, but Ajax have chosen against the move, despite the fact that Ognjenovic's name was twice on the scoreboard on Saturday during an 8-0 rout in their friendly against Emmen.
